Architecture is the one art we all live inside. Architecture books teach you to see it: why a courtyard keeps a house cool, how a temple is planned, what makes one room restful and another restless. This page is the starting point for students, practising architects and anyone who simply loves beautiful buildings. The shelves linked below hold our books on architecture, interior design books and illustrated titles on Indian buildings.
This shelf is still small. If you need a specific textbook or monograph, send us the title through the Request a Book page.
Indian architecture books cover an astonishing range: rock cut caves, temple towns, Mughal tombs and gardens, stepwells, havelis, colonial cities and the modern work of the last seventy years. Illustrated books with plans and photographs are the best way to study them at home, and they are equally at ease on a drawing board or a coffee table.
If you are doing up a home, interior design books are a better guide than a thousand saved pictures, because they explain the reasoning: proportion, light, colour and how a family actually uses a room. Books on traditional Indian homes are full of ideas that suit our climate, such as shaded verandahs, inner courtyards and cross ventilation.
