The humanities ask the oldest questions people have: where did we come from, what should we believe, and how should we live? This section gathers several hundred history books, philosophy books and books on religion that try to answer them. You will find narrative histories and biographies of nations, the great philosophers from Plato to Kierkegaard, and writing on Sufism, Christianity and the faiths of India. It is a shelf for patient, curious readers.
Philosophy has a reputation for being difficult, but several of its greatest books are short and direct. Meditations by Marcus Aurelius is a Roman emperor's private notebook on staying calm and doing one's duty. The Republic by Plato asks what justice is through lively conversation. The Art of War by Sun Tzu and Chanakya's Arthashastra are read today as much for strategy in business and life as for history. All four are available in our store, and any of them is a good first step into books on philosophy.
Our history shelf ranges from sweeping accounts of whole civilisations to the story of a single event or a single life. If textbooks put you off history at school, try a narrative history written by a good storyteller. You may be surprised how gripping the past becomes when it is told well. For more guidance, see the History page.
Books here approach religion as something to be understood as well as practised: the lives of prophets and saints, the poetry of Rumi and the Sufi tradition, and thoughtful studies of faith in the modern world. For scriptures and devotional reading, visit Religion and Spirituality.
