Not long ago, buying a book meant a trip to the market, a slow walk along the shelves and, quite often, hearing the words "out of stock, come next week". Today you can buy books online from your phone in a few minutes and have them delivered to your door, whether you live in a big city or a small town.
Still, many readers hesitate the first time. Will the right edition arrive? Is it the Hindi or the English version? What if the book comes damaged? How do I pay? This guide walks through the whole process step by step, so that the first time you buy books online in India it goes smoothly, and every time after that it takes you two minutes.
Why so many readers now buy books online
- Far more choice. A shop has space for a few thousand titles. An online bookstore can list many times that number, including older and less common books.
- It reaches every pincode. Good bookshops are concentrated in large cities. Online, a reader in a small town sees the same catalogue as a reader in Delhi or Mumbai.
- You can search instead of hunt. Type the title or the author and you know in seconds whether the book is available.
- You can take your time. Nobody is waiting behind you. You can read the description, compare two editions and decide tomorrow.
- Heavy parcels come to you. Ten books for the family are no fun to carry home on a bus.
Step 1: Know what you are looking for
If you already have a book in mind, search for it by its title. If the title is common, add the author's name. The most exact way of all is the ISBN, the 13 digit number printed above the barcode on the back cover of every book. Two books can share a title, but no two editions share an ISBN, so if a friend or a teacher has recommended a particular edition, ask for that number.
If you do not have a title in mind, start from a subject instead. Browse a section such as Fiction, Self Help, Biography and Autobiography or Children Books the way you would walk along a shelf, and open whatever catches your eye.
Step 2: Check the edition, language and format
This is where most first time mistakes happen, and it takes ten seconds to avoid them. Before you add a book to your cart, look at three things.
- Language. Many popular books are sold in both English and Hindi. Think and Grow Rich is a good example, and so are classics like Nirmala by Premchand. The language is normally written in the title or in the details, so read it once before you buy.
- Format. Paperback, hardcover, board book or box set. For toddlers a board book survives much longer than a paperback. For a gift, a hardcover feels special.
- Edition or volume. Series, textbooks and story collections often come in several volumes. Make sure you are ordering volume one if that is the one you need.
Step 3: Read the description properly
In a shop you would turn the book over and read the back cover. Online, the description does the same job. A good product page tells you what the book is about, who it is for and what is inside. Look at the cover picture closely, check the author and publisher, and for children's books check the suggested age.
If you are buying for a child and are not sure which level is right, it is easier to start from age than from title. The Shop by Age page groups books for 3 to 4, 4 to 6 and 6 to 8 year olds, and our guide to the best books for kids by age explains what suits each stage.
Step 4: Check delivery to your pincode
Before you order, confirm that the book can reach you and roughly when. On Book Factory every product page has a Check Delivery tool: enter your pincode and you will see whether we deliver there and the estimated delivery window.
As a general guide, orders are packed and handed to the courier within 3 business days. After dispatch, most orders reach metro cities in 4 to 7 business days and other cities and towns in 5 to 10 business days. Remote pincodes can take a little longer. If you need a book for a birthday or an exam, count backwards from the date and order with a few days to spare. The full details are on the shipping policy page.
Step 5: Add to cart and review your order
Add the books you want to the cart, then open the cart and read it once like a shopping list. Check three things: the titles are the ones you meant, the quantity of each is right, and the total, including any delivery charge, is what you expected. Any delivery charge is shown before you pay, so there should be no surprise at the end.
One practical tip: if you plan to buy two or three books this month, order them together. One parcel is simpler to receive than three, and it often works out better on delivery charges as well.
Step 6: Fill in your address carefully and choose how to pay
A wrong address is the most common reason a parcel is delayed. Write the full address with house or flat number, street, a nearby landmark, the correct pincode and a mobile number that you will actually answer. The delivery agent usually calls before arriving.
Then choose your payment method from the options shown at checkout. Cash on delivery is available, which many first time buyers prefer: you pay when the parcel is in your hands. Keep the amount ready on the day so that the delivery is quick.
Step 7: Track your order
Once your order is dispatched you receive a tracking number by email or SMS. You can follow the parcel with it, or sign in and open My Orders to see the current status: placed, shipped, out for delivery or delivered. Courier partners normally try to deliver up to three times, so if you miss the first attempt, answer the call or message from the delivery agent and fix a time.
When the parcel arrives
Open the parcel the same day and check it. Is it the right title, the right language and the right edition? Is the cover clean and are the pages intact?
If a book arrives damaged, or you have received a different book from the one you ordered, take a clear photo and raise a return or replacement request from My Orders within 24 hours of delivery. That window is short, so do not leave the parcel unopened for a week. If the outer package itself looks crushed, torn or wet, photograph it before you open it. The return policy page explains what qualifies and how refunds work.
Common mistakes when you buy books online
- Ordering the wrong language. Always read the title to the end. "(Hindi)" is easy to miss on a small screen.
- Judging only by the cover. Two editions of a classic can look different and contain the same text, or look alike and be abridged. Read the description.
- Buying too advanced a book for a child. A book that is a year too hard usually goes untouched. Buy for the age the child is today.
- Typing the address in a hurry. One wrong digit in the pincode can send a parcel to another city.
- Ordering at the last minute. Delivery takes days, not hours. For gifts and exams, order a week or more ahead.
- Not checking the parcel on arrival. Problems are easy to fix on day one and much harder later.
Buying books online as a gift
Books make thoughtful gifts because they show you have thought about the person. Pick a subject the person already loves rather than a book you think they ought to read. A well known title is a safe choice for someone whose taste you do not know well: The Power of Your Subconscious Mind for a young adult starting a career, or an illustrated story collection for a child. For a small child, an activity book like My First ABC Sticker Book is opened and used the very same day.
You can also have the parcel delivered straight to the person by entering their address at checkout. For more ideas, see our guide to the perfect book gift for every occasion.
