About the Author
Booker T. Washington (1856–1915) was an educator, author, and advisor to U.S. presidents. Born into slavery, he rose to become the founder of the Tuskegee Institute, promoting education and economic self-sufficiency for African Americans. His philosophy of gradual progress and racial uplift made him a central figure in post-Civil War America. His autobiography, Up from Slavery, remains one of the most significant works in American history.
