Regarding the period's political and administrative features, the account is primarily based upon well-known original sources the Memoirs of Babur, the Memoirs of Jahangir, the immortal work of Abul Fazl and so forth. Incidentally, it shows that religious intolerance, commonly believed to have been spurred by bigotry only during Aurangzeb's reign, was not wholly unknown during the reigns of Jahangir and Shah Jahan. The later chapters make use of the records of early European merchants and travellers to gauge the general circumstances of the Mughal empire.
